Abstract
In this study, the role and the right dosage of theophylline, a methylxanthine derivative, in prevention of ischemia-reperfusion injury of the lung has been investigated.
This experimental study was done on 30 rats; in experimental group (EG) 1 (n:5) 20 mg/L, in EG 2 (n:5) 100 mg/L, in EG 3 (n:5) 400 mg/L and in EG 4 (n:5) 1000 mg/L theophylline added flush solution was perfused. Lungs were kept in hypothermic state for 6 hours and ventilated for 30 minutes with 100 % O2. Tissue levels of dien congugate (DC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) , intermediate products of lipid peroxidation, were measured. The results were compared to the 2 control groups.
Dien congugate and MDA levels in groups preserved with 400-1000 mg/L were significantly less than the other groups.
The results of this study showed that 400-1000 mg/lt of theophylline in the flush solution decreased the ischemic injury.
