Abstract

Introduction: In our study; we aimed to determine the smoking habits of the personnel employed in our hospital, to investigate the influence of age, sex, work environment, environment and family and to give opinions relating to the smoking habit. 241 personnel employed in our hospital (70.8%) were included in this study.

Material and Method: A survey of 21 questions was applied to the personnel which participate in the study. The survey of 241 persons, whose average age is 28.11(±7.9), was evaluated. The data were evaluated by means of the SPSS 11.0 program.

Results: It was determined that 39.8% of the personnel who participated in the study smoked, and the first smoking age is in the 18-25 group, with 28.6%. The reason for starting to smoke in 20.3% of the smokers was determined as being he effect of their close friends.

Conclusion: Smoking in nurses and other healthcare personnel who have roles in protecting and educating the public is an important problem in our country. In the study we carried out, 45 persons (18.7%) stated that they had tried to quit smoking but failed. It will be useful to direct presently smoking personnel to quit smoking with medical or psychological support. (Tur Toraks Der 2008;9:160-6)
