Right Middle Lobe Syndrome in Children Applied with Chronic Cough: A Retrospective Study

Abstract

The frequency of right middle lobe syndrome has been increased in childhood ages by the developments in the screening methods. In our study it was aimed to search the frequency, etiology and the prognoses of right middle lobe syndrome in children who had been applied with chronic cough. In this retrospective study 2209 children who appliedwith chronic cough into Department of Allergy-Pulmonology were taken into the study. Tuberculin test, levels of IgM, IgG, IgA and IgE antibodies, skin tests, sweat tests, gastroesophageal reflux scintigraphy results of the cases from whom had been established right middle lobe syndrome by the findings of the chest graphics and /or CT were recorded. Right middle lobe syndrome was established in 3% (67) cases with chronic cough. The mean age was 6.2±3.2, the ratio of boy/girl was 1:16. The pathologies established in the etiology were lined as allergic asthma (23,9%), idiopathic (23,4%), reactive airway disease (13,4%), tuberculosis (11,9%) and others. In 22 cases whole, in 37 cases partial improvements were observed, 9 cases became refractory 6 months after the diagnosis. Right middle lobe syndrome should be searched especially in our patients with allergic asthma among the patients who applied with persistan airway pathologies.
