Abstract
ARDS is a relatively common syndrome encountered in intensive care units and its mortality is gradually diminishing due to nearly forty years of experience and research. Mechanical ventilation is the major treatment of this syndrome but its misuse may trigger or worsen this pathology it is actually trying to cure. For that reason, the proper use of mechanical ventilation is crucial for the outcome. Based on the studies published till nowadays, this review has the purpose to outline the proper mechanical ventilation strategies for ARDS patients. The aim is a systematic and up-to-date treatment of ARDS in our country with watchfully collected evidence based data.
