Abstract

Abstract

In this article, developments and current status of Turkey in tobacco control was evaluated in the light of international regulations. For the first time, WHO accepted and declared an international treaty on tobacco control in 2003; “Framework Convention on Tobacco Control”. By this Convention, WHO aimed to give momentum to the tobacco control activities in the Member States. Five years after this treaty, WHO published the “Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic” in early 2008, which gives an overall idea on tobacco control globally, by providing information on tobacco control activities in the Member States. The first Anti-Tobacco Law in Turkey came into force in 1996, and in 2008, the coverage of the Law was extended to include bars, restaurants and cafes. With this Law, Turkey becomes one of the leading countries in tobacco control activities.
