Abstract

Natural rubber latex (NRL), the main constituent of numerous household items, office supplies and medical products, is one of the indispensable substances in our life. A series of allergic reactions ranging from contact urticaria to fatal anaphylaxis due to NRL have been described. Latex allergens absorbed by the powder become airborne during glove use and may produce symptoms in sensitized persons. Especially atopic healthcare workers are at the highest risk of latex allergy. Here we present two healthcare workers with latex allergy whose respiratory symptoms regarding allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma increase in critical care units and operating rooms. In conclusion, we suggest that all physicians should be aware of the importance of latex allergy.
